Announcing the arrival of New Zealand’s first Knabstrupper foal by frozen semen at SkyHi Horses!
For as long as I can remember I have been captivated by Knabstruppers since seeing a spectacular leopard spot in a circus as a child. However, being thousands of miles away from Europe and given the rarity of Knabstruppers I had come to accept that breeding Knabstruppers in New Zealand was an improbable quest!
Little did I know that my unlikely dream was on it’s way to becoming a reality when I was surfing through all my bookmarked Knabstrupper websites one Saturday morning. I was looking at all the new seasons foals with envious eyes, when to my amazement I noticed that Blacklaw Stud was advertising frozen semen to NZ importation requirements from their beautiful few spot Stallion, Xhogun Middelsom whom I’ve long admired. I got in touch with Annabel and Jon, and with the support of my partner Mark, we decided to buy all the NZ stock she had available. It was a bit of a risk, but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and we decided to go for it, and we are very glad we did.
The semen arrived late in the NZ breeding season, but with the help of a specialist equine breeding facility, we were lucky to have one mare inseminated in Feb 2009. The mare is an 18hh black registered NZ Warmblood with excellent Hanoverian and Dutch warmblood lines. In Jan 2010, SkyHi Exotic, NZ’s first Knab foal by frozen semen (as far as we are aware!) was born. Exotic is everything we could have hoped for, she is a big filly with incredibly intelligence, excellent movement – and judging by the aerobatic displays she is fond of – probably destined for NZ’s show jumping arenas in future years. She provides us with an invaluable start to our long term breeding programme.
We are expecting our 2nd foal to Xhogun in early 2011, fingers crossed, but this time out of our Trakehner classified TB mare. We are hoping to send at least 2 more mares for insemination later this year, with the hope of having some more Xhogun youngsters between Oct and Nov 2011.
It is incredibly exciting for us to be realising and living a dream, and we have been in touch with the KNN to make sure that where possible, we are meeting their requirements in order to hopefully gain Danish passports for some, if not all of our future foals.
The next step for us will be finding another source of frozen semen from a line that will compliment our Xhogun Middelsom foundation line. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’d like to discuss further on skyhihorses@gmail.com

The application forms and full details of the 2008 International Knabstrupper Conference are now available! Please follow the link below, which will take you to the KNN site and further details: KNN Knabstrupper Conference 2008 This is a particularly exciting conference because the speakers have just published a paper in Genetics Journal, as they have determined that the gene TRPM1 (Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel, Subfamily M, Member 1) is the gene in which the causative mutation for both Knabstrupper spotting and CSNB is most likely located. Follow this link to the online publication of "Genetics". The authors will be available to take questions on all aspects of spotting pattern inheritance.
